As we are off to Normandy on the scooters, week on Sunday I have decided to do part 5 before I have finished section 4 Light.
The reason for this is two-fold. The shire magnitude of the light section and the learning involved needs careful onsideration and lots of pre-reading and learning. Secondly Normandy is a great chance to create an illustration that is worthy for the task and I think it would work well.
A few months ago I came across this The Ghosts of World War II's Past (20 photos) - My Modern Metropolis and thought the concept was fantastic. Created by Russian Photographer Sergey Larenkov who used Photoshop to create the images. Obviously at this point I am not proficient enough in Photoshop to attempt to emulate this, but I am going to read further an interview he gave regarding the images http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/ghosts-of-world-war-ii-paris-6
The crux of the interview is what In have cut and pasted below.
What inspired you to start this series?I collect old postcards with views of St. Petersburg and Leningrad. One day, I decided to combine them with modern photos. When I learned how to do it with postcards, I started doing it with archived photographs. The first of my historical collages was about the blockade of Leningrad. Both my grandmothers and both my grandfathers battled and worked in that besieged city. Therefore, this theme is especially close to me.
What's the reaction been like?
When I made these pictures, I never thought that it would elicit such a reaction. Many people say that I have opened a portal of time to the past. I began to receive many good reviews that prompted me to continue this project. After St. Petersburg, I made collages in Moscow, Berlin, Prague, Vienna and other cities. I'm just now releasing photographs taken in Paris.
Do you only use Photoshop or do you use other tools?
Yes, I impose one image to another using Photoshop, it's not complicated. It's much harder to find the point where the old image was made.
Where do you get your old photos from? Do you go out and take the new ones yourself?
Old photos I take mostly from the archives. I take all the modern images myself because the most important part is finding the desired point to shoot.
How long does each picture take you?
That depends on each photograph. Sometimes the collages are obtained quickly, within one evening, but sometimes I have to travel several times to the same place so that I can achieve the best possible match.
What did you hope to achieve with these photo-in-photos?
With this project, I want to show the horrors of war to people so that it can help prevent wars again.
Any last words?
It's very interesting to find the point where another photographer once stood. Suddenly, you see an old world with your very own eyes. You are transported back in time, it's almost as if you've stepped into a time machine. Sometimes, this is scary.

January 2012
During my trip to Normandy I was unable to acquire the photographs that I wanted purely due to time and consideration of fellow travellers. The thought was good but I would not have been able to do the subject matter justice. I am travelling to Belgium in June this year and intend to acquire some photographs that may be of interest to this topic but ones that will not be part of this assignment.
The strongest pull to this assignment is a love I have had since the age of 14/15 its a type of music called Northern Soul.
There is a film in the making by Elaine Constantine who like myself has been into the music for a considerable amount of time. Here is a taster of the film from which the images where taken.
These are some more of the images that are inspirational in their style and also portray the very soul of the music and what the scene is all about.
My plan is to take the images at one of the following venues.
Though highly likely any photographs taken will be at The Wulfrun, Blackpool or Stoke...........
So the seed is set and the plan is on it's way. My thought is to utilise all the other sections in the module within the last assignment that way the skills I have acquired will be highlighted.
